Success requires dedication, focus and commitment.

I’ve turned my love, my passion, music, into a full-time job and want to find other artists who are in the same boat.

If you know of an artist who is equally committed, please let me know!

Is It Time For A Change? What Do You and Katy Perry and Robin Thicke and Tori Amos Have In Common?

November 14, 2013

I know some people are going to say, “I should never change the style of music I write, sing or perform. Music is art. If I change to become more marketable, I’m a sellout.”

Katy Perry went from being a very average singer/songwriter, playing the guitar at Hotel Cafe like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4D1kNH6O1o

To this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdGZBRAwW74

Lady Gaga went from playing piano at NYU as Stefani Germanotta: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NM51qOpwcIM

To this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pco91kroVgQ

Check out Robin Thicke’s early music video and LONG hair here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7K7orMOHqY

To his summer smash “Blurred Lines”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyDUC1LUXSU (warning: nudity!)

Remember when Nelly Furtado sang that she was “like a bird?” here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roPQ_M3yJTA

She shed her wholesome image to be “Promiscuous” here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J3vgcE5i2o

No wonder they say “sex sells.”

But my point isn’t that you need to be more sexy to sell downloads or get attention….but look at those early videos.

Katy Perry wasn’t doing anything to stand out from the hundreds of other singer/songwriters that played Hotel Cafe.

If you think your image doesn’t matter, you’re wrong.

My point, however, is this.

If the style of music you’re writing and performing is working and connecting with fans – keep at it! Get out there. Get more fans on social media and through live shows.

However, if you’re honest with yourself, and you perform and your crowds aren’t growing organically online and in person, maybe you need to MAKE A CHANGE!

You know the saying that they use in Hollywood, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

We all need a makeover from time to time to update our hair and clothes in our personal life or we’d still be wearing acid wash jeans, right?

So maybe your music needs a fresh reboot too!

Most artists change styles from one album to the next, right? Sometimes a lot and sometimes a little but no two albums are exactly the same.

Maybe you need to reboot your music career under an entirely different genre.

Or maybe not.

Can you think of other artists who changed?

Remember Tori Amos? Her first album was a punk style record called “Y Kant Tori Read” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh4B0jjVeYU and it wasn’t until she embraced her REAL roots http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtEfpHkvHfA that she got attention….after almost a decade of playing in hotel bars that is….her label tried to make her into something she wasn’t and it misfired…but most of the time, trying a new image and style of music is worth a shot don’t you think?
