How do you make money from the music business?

July 31, 2012

I’ve sent out quite a few articles lately about the business of the music industry.

One thing I forgot to mention in the article is this:

If you want to make money from your music, do things that will MAKE you money as an artist/band.

Do these things:

1) Play paying shows

2) Sell merch at those shows

3) Make YouTube videos that get millions of hits

4) Sell your CD at shows

5) Promote and sell your mp3s on iTunes

6) Write and record songs that you can license

7) Invest in PR

8) Promote your music to film/tv – it’s one of the only areas that will return your investment – often many times over!

What other ideas do you have?

Too many artists focus on the “fun” creative side and they don’t work on things that will actually bring them income!

So, in summary, if you want to MAKE MONEY from the music business, FOCUS ON DOING THINGS THAT WILL GET YOU PAID!!

(Please feel free to forward this email and this email alone to members of your band or other artists you know. But please do not post it on a web site or blog without asking permission from the author. Thanks!)
